Made in Europe: from mine to electric vehicle

A tsunami of cheap electric vehicles from China could lead to a nightmarish de-industrialisation in Europe. Dr Peter Tom Jones, a well known climate author, is convinced that Europe has to take the full value chain back in its own hands, from mine to electric vehicle. He undertakes a road trip in the Nordic countries to visit iconic mines and show best practices. He talks to the indigenous Sami people and to European leaders.

Europe’s Mining Renaissance

In this 22-minute documentary Peter Tom Jones (Director KU Leuven Institute for Sustainable Metals and Minerals - SIM2 KU Leuven) searches for answers to Europe’s seemingly problematic relationship with primary mining of energy transition metals.

Mini-documentary – The Sami Perspective

The Sami Perspective: new mini-documentary on the difficult relationship between the indigenous reindeer-herding Sami communities and metal mining in the far North of Europe.

Interview with Maroš Šefčovič about made-in-Europe electric vehicles and the competition with China

Just recently, the European Commission launched an investigation into cheap Chinese electric vehicles 'flooding' our market. This is just one of the challenges that Europe is facing in its transition towards electric mobility and reducing CO2 emissions. On 17 November, the KU Leuven Institute for Sustainable Metals and Minerals (SIM²) will be releasing a 52-minute documentary entitled “Made in Europe: from mine to electric vehicle” (Euractiv interview with Jones about this documentary can be viewed here). The documentary investigates the challenges faced by Europe as it attempts to set up its own, fully integrated, mine-to-EV value chain. The film acts as a wake-up call to avoid that Europe’s decarbonisation strategy leads to a nightmarish de-industrialisation. Instead, the documentary shows that Europe’s transition to climate neutrality can go hand in hand with a cleantech-based re-industrialisation. Made-in-Europe.

Exclusive interview with Jan Moström (CEO LKAB & President Euromines)

On 17 November 2023, SIM2 KU Leuven released a 52-minute documentary entitled “Made in Europe: from mine to electric vehicle”. One of the highlights of the documentary is the visit of the film’s presenter, Peter Tom Jones, to LKAB’s underground iron mine and the adjacent (recently discovered) Per Geijer rare-earth deposit in the Arctic town of Kiruna. After spending more than 6 hours underground, Peter Tom Jones got the rare opportunity to conduct an in-depth, 30-minute interview with one of Sweden’s key players in the domain of critical raw materials, i.e. LKAB’s Jan Moström.

The Sami Perspective: Exclusive interview with Stefan Mikaelsson about mining of energy-transition metals in Kiruna and beyond...

Why do (most of) the Sami indigenous people object to the mining of energy-transition metals in the Northern part of Sweden? Find out in this exclusive vodcast interview with Stefan Mikaelsson by Peter Tom Jones. As Deputy President of the General Assembly of the Sami Parliament in Sweden, Stefan Mikaelsson has been one of the most vocal persons to defend the traditional Sami culture and reindeer husbandry traditions.
